He replaces James Hughes in the role, after his move to Gong Kong to head-up the group's Asia-Pacific multi-manager operations.

Morrell, who joined HSBC in 2004, will also continue on in his role as head of the global real estate investment team within the multi-manager division.

He will also continue as lead manager on the Open Global Property Fund which launched last November.

Hughes will remain global head of business development for HSBC’s multi-manager team, while European multi-manager head Raphael Sobotka will continue to oversee Europe, Middle East and Africa investment for asset classes excluding real estate.

Morrell said: "The appointment of dedicated business heads for important global regions further reinforces HSBC’s credentials."
